Profile

What inspired you to get into this work?

As the number of traditional lacquerware workshops was decreasing, I wondered if I could continue as I had been in the family of lacquer craftsmen for four generations, when a study group for the Kainan City Successor Training Program started and I began to study the history and depth of the techniques.

What do you want to appeal the most in your work?

Since I am a traditional craftsman in the general category of lacquer ware and maki-e, I sometimes take on both jobs separately.

As for the lacquer ware, I specialize in Negoro-nuri and other abrasive patterns, and all of them are finished in roiro-nuri.

Maki-e is mainly used for accessories, and I am good at "Togidashi" maki-e, in which colored lacquer is applied on top of gold powder, and depending on the angle, the maki-e can look like gold. I also use different techniques to create slightly different finishes on the same design.

What do you keep in mind when creating your work?

We also produce items that can be used not only for special occasions, but also for everyday use, and we are always trying to produce accessories that are not exactly the same as others, except for custom-made items.

We also make sure that bowls and other items to be worn in the mouth are delivered approximately two months after completion to avoid lacquer rash.

What do you want to achieve from now on? Or how do you want to live?

As one of the few Kishu lacquerware workshops that produce traditional lacquerware from start to finish, we would like to preserve and pass on the art of natural lacquer painting through maki-e (lacquer painting) workshops and other activities.

We also hope to introduce Japanese culture to the world through collaborations with other crafts.

Other free description

Although people overseas are interested in lacquerware, as evidenced by the publication in an Italian magazine and the visits of foreign cruise ship visitors, locally, the focus is on modern lacquerware. We created the walls of the main conference hall and reception area of the new Kainan City Hall in Negoro-nuri lacquerware, and we hope that this will trigger a reevaluation of traditional lacquerware.
